3 new classrooms during a 3 year plan, has seen school enrolments and exam pass rates improve in Uganda

Kahara Primary School, in West Uganda, has seen vast improvements in their education program, thanks to a 2011 three year infrastructure plan by Build Africa.

“We have attracted parents and attendance has improved from 256 to 386 because the new classes have space for the students to work. And we have new desks. They can’t cheat now!” said Christopher, the Headmaster of Kahara Primary School.

Isolation and vulnerability, successfully being challenged

Volunteer Sue Anderson, has helped Deborah White reconnect with her local community in New South Wales, Australia, thanks to an initiative to help combat isolation and vulnerability.

“MATES (the program initiative) has led to a huge change in my life and the weekly outings with Sue have allowed me to rebuild my self esteem”, said Debora White.

The MATES program was established by Red Cross in 1986. It aims to help ‘reconnect socially isolated people to their local communities’, reported Project Officer, Kerry Curd. “Participants come from a variety of backgrounds and may include people with a mental or physical illness, people who have been or who are homeless, and the frail and elderly”, continued Kerry.

Sub-Saharan African countries are prospering from $90 million food security implementations

A $90 million, five year (2011–16) intervention program, in 11 African countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, is seeing positive results in the local community.

‘Since I joined the Field Farmer School introduced by ActionAid, I can now sell spinach and cowpea leaves once every week at the vegetable market. I make an average of 600 Kenyan Shillings [A$7.50]. From the proceeds I have managed to purchase three rabbits for 1000 Kenyan Shillings [A$12.50]. I now contribute to household income and my children no longer go hungry’, said Susan Apua a farmer from Kenya.

This is just one example of the work that is being completed by The Australia Africa Community Engagement Scheme (AACES), which is a partnership between the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID), ten Australian non-government organisations (NGOs) and their Africa-based partners.
